OVERVIEW

Visually Speaking is a live online experience that gives students the ability to learn and participate in assignments using their own familiar surroundings. This masterclass includes 5 sessions spread over a week and a half. A full day is given between each class to complete each assignment given.

Sessions will be held every other weekday
(M, W, F then M, W) — May 11, 13, 15, 18 and 20, 2026
5:00 PM CDT / 6:00 PM EDT / 3:00 PM PDT

Each session will be 2 hours in length with a 10 minute break in the middle. The first half of each session will be spent reviewing photographs completed from the previous assignment. After the break, a new topic will be taught and a new assignment given.

Sessions will be recorded and posted privately for all participants to review.

In addition - each student will get a private one-on-one zoom call with Ted to discuss the class work or any other photography related help you might be seeking. Private sessions are 30 minutes and will be scheduled after you register.

DATES & SCHEDULE WITH KEY TOPICS

Group Sessions will be held every other weekday (M, W, F then M, W) from May 11 to May 20.
The 30-minute one-on-one session with Ted will be scheduled separately, but will occur during the May 11-20 timeframe.

The schedule of session topics will be as follows:

Day One, Monday, May 11th — Mapping the Ocean
5:00-7:00 pm CDT
To fully understand the possibilities that photography presents to us, we have to understand the tools of the visual vocabulary and the canvas on which they are applied. The concept of figure/ground relationship is essential to creating pictures that express both interest and intent.

Day Two, Wednesday, May 13th — Elements of a Visual Language
5:00-7:00 pm CDT
In this session, we will learn and understand visual devices that make our images more impactful. We’ll cover the concepts of visual syntax, symbolism, metaphor and context.

Day Three, Friday, May 15th — A Game of Contrasts
5:00-7:00 pm CDT
Successful pictures are always a “balance of contrasts.” Typically in photography contrast is a balance of shadow and light, but we will also look at this in a compositional sense. We will cover concepts such as “The Edge of the Frame”, Visual Balance, Negative Space and the Japanese idea of Koh-Itten.

Day Four, Monday, May 18th — Working In Layers
5:00-7:00 pm CDT
As photography is a 2D representation of a 3D world, understanding how to work in layers will effectively impact your compositional skills. We will discuss vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and sub-framing as veiling techniques; and how to start using these techniques in your own compositional practice.

Day Five, Wednesday, May 20th — Breaking the Fourth Wall
5:00-7:00 pm CDT
Often photographers work image to image. In other words we make a statement in one picture (successful or not), then we move on to the next. In this session we will focus on thinking across images in series or groups. We will develop an understanding of the greater volume of our output encouraging consistency and relationships between images.
