KYOTO & TOKYO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY

Japan Workshop :: December 2024

Photographers from various locations—South Korea, France, and the United States—gathered with David Brookover and Ted Forbes for this photography workshop, which ran December 2-13, 2024.

Photography instruction included small group and individual guidance on location as well as image roundtable discussions led by Ted and David.

The 11-day experience included time in Kyoto, Tokyo, Nara, and Odawara. The group encountered a mix of traditional and modern Japanese culture as they visited iconic temples & shrines, distinct neighborhoods, popular attractions, and “insider” locales.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Connections to Japanese photo history and aesthetics (such as koh-itten) were presented prior to gathering in Japan and then reinforced throughout the workshop experience.

  • The temple grounds at Nanzenji, Eikando, and Ginkakuji in Kyoto presented optimal fall colors, and we found ourselves immersed in green on visits to the Bamboo Forest and Gioji’s moss garden in Arashiyama.

  • Other Kyoto highlights included a walk along the Philosopher’s Path, a maiko photoshoot, bluegrass music at the world’s finest Japanese Honky Tonk, and a visit to Benrido Atelier—one of only two places in the world with expertise in collotype printing.

  • The trains and streets of Tokyo delivered us to many photogenic neighborhoods and parks—among them Ueno, Yoyogi, Harajuku, Shinjuku, Asakusa, and Shibuya.

  • A visit to the Tokyo Skytree provided views of the city from 2,000 feet above, and a journey to the Nikon Headquarters and Museum resulted in a private tour with two senior lens designers.

  • We ventured to Nara for a day trip, which provided memorable experiences with the many deer found throughout the city, the massive Buddha at Todaiji Temple, and a mochi-making experience.

  • On another day trip, we escaped from Tokyo to Odawara, which is home to the Enoura Observatory. This magnificent land art site is the creation of Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. Enoura features a gallery, tea house, sculpture gardens, an orange grove, theatrical stages, and structures for celestial observation.
