KYOTO: BETWEEN MOMENTS
This year, I’m adding something new to our Japan workshops—an experience I’ve wanted to explore for a long time. In July, we’ll spend six days in Kyoto during Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s oldest and most visually dynamic festivals.
Kyoto in summer feels entirely different from any other season I’ve experienced there. The air is heavy with heat, the streets stay active late into the evening, and there’s a constant sense that something is about to unfold. It’s a city in motion—layered, unpredictable, and full of small moments that reward patience and attention. That energy is what this workshop is built around.
Our time together centers on Gion Matsuri. This will be my first time experiencing it firsthand, and I want to approach it the same way I approach any meaningful photographic subject—with curiosity, openness, and a willingness to respond rather than control. We’ll work without a rigid agenda, engaging the festival as photographers—observing, anticipating, and finding structure within the chaos.
Between festival moments, we’ll explore key locations and quieter corners of Kyoto, creating space to slow down, reflect, and refine our approach. The balance between intensity and stillness is what makes this experience unique—and photographically rich.
The Gion District will be our home for seven nights and six days, from July 12–19, 2026. Limited to just five photographers, this will be a small, focused group designed for meaningful one-on-one interaction, thoughtful discussion, and a shared commitment to the work.
EXPERIENCE NOTES
A photography-focused exploration of the streets, passageways, canals, and quiet corners of Gion, which will serve as our home neighborhood throughout the week.
Visits to select temples, shrines, and gardens that offer insight into Kyoto’s history, architecture, and visual culture.
An in-depth engagement with Gion Matsuri through both daytime and evening events—float processions, illuminations, performances, and more. We will remain flexible so we can respond to what unfolds in real time.
Exclusive cultural experiences and private photoshoot, including a session with maiko.
Summer in Kyoto presents distinct visual conditions—heat, humidity, and long days—which we will use to develop a heightened awareness of light and atmosphere.
We will walk extensively throughout the trip (approximately 10,000 steps per day). Traveling light is essential.
The summer climate is hot and humid. Preparation and hydration will be important.
An interpreter will travel with the group to assist with communication and logistics.
INSTRUCTIONAL NOTES
I will lead this workshop with assistance from Tokyo-based photographer Keigo Moriyama. Our goal is to support your growth through a balance of structure and responsiveness—guidance when needed, and space to explore when it matters.
You can expect:
A pre-trip online session (cultural context + logistics)
Individual Zoom calls with me to define goals and direction
Small-group instruction on location throughout Kyoto
Regular roundtable image reviews (approximately every other day)
A post-trip online session and final image review
This experience is open to photographers of all levels. However, participants should be comfortable with their camera and familiar with core concepts such as exposure and focus.
