KYOTO: A VISUAL IMMERSION

Join me December 2–12 for a deeper exploration of Kyoto—one shaped by time, repetition, and a more deliberate way of working… and seeing.

Each time I return to Kyoto, I notice something different. What initially feels overwhelming starts to organize itself into patterns—of light, movement, and cultural identity. This workshop is built around that idea: spending enough time in one place to move beyond first impressions and begin to see more clearly.

What makes Kyoto unique is how its history is still visible throughout the city. Temples, shrines, and gardens aren’t set apart—they’re part of the city itself. More importantly, this is a place where we can work directly with that history—photographing Maiko, collaborating with performers like Butoh dancers, and engaging with traditions that are still active today. For many photographers, this is the side of Japan they’re hoping to experience—something that’s harder to access in larger, more modern cities.

This isn’t a photowalk or a guided tour. It’s a chance to spend real time working in one place—returning to locations, refining your approach, and learning how to see more clearly as the week unfolds.

EXPERIENCE NOTES

Kyoto offers a wide range of photographic and cultural experiences. Throughout the workshop, you can expect:

  • A focused introduction to the Gion District through guided exercises designed to build familiarity and establish a visual rhythm early in the trip.

  • Visits to select temples and shrines, with an emphasis on both cultural context and how to approach these environments photographically.

  • An in-depth visit to Benrido Atelier—one of the few studios in the world specializing in collotype printing.

  • Exploration of Kyoto’s gardens—from the Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds to smaller, more intimate spaces in Arashiyama.

  • Private cultural sessions and photoshoots, including work with a Butoh dancer, Noh performers, and Maiko.

  • An evening of dinner and live music at a local Honky Tonk—one of the more unexpected experiences in Kyoto.

  • A day trip to Osaka, focusing on urban and architectural photography in a contrasting environment.

  • Daily walking (approximately 10,000 steps). Traveling light is recommended.

  • 1–2 interpreters will accompany the group to assist with communication and logistics.

INSTRUCTIONAL NOTES

I’ll lead this workshop with assistance from Tokyo-based photographer Keigo Moriyama. The goal is to help you develop a more consistent way of working—through a mix of guidance, repetition, and time to reflect on what you’re doing.

You can expect:

  • Two online prep sessions prior to departure (cultural context and logistics)

  • Individual Zoom calls to define your goals and approach

  • Small-group instruction and assignments throughout the trip

  • Regular image review sessions (approximately every other day)

  • A post-trip online session and final image review

This experience is open to photographers of all levels. However, participants should be comfortable with their camera and familiar with core technical concepts such as exposure and focus.
